Water Hub’s services and support

The Water Hub provides free communications support to water justice groups, including writing, news pitching, strategic messaging, digital, design and campaign planning.

In addition to the on-call help we provide to advocates, we also work on long-term narrative change through arts and culture collaborations and creative storytelling and campaigns.

Our partners are across the United States and focus on issues including drinking water access and affordability, climate impacts on communities including drought and flooding, how to integrate arts and culture to help people reconnect to their relationship to water, and more.

Media Strategy

We work to facilitate more accessible and inclusive water news that speaks to shared values.

Our team pitches stories, hosts media briefings and other events, draft op-eds, and helps partners prepare for interviews. We know the water challenges we’re facing can feel overwhelming at times, which is why one of our strategic focuses as a collective is to find solutions and stories to inspire hope and action.

Color of Water:

We created our Color of Water Initiative to build voice and visibility for people of color in the water movement. Our goal is to connect reporters with a more diverse set of experts and to build the capacity of these spokespeople to elevate the stories of impacted communities, which have often been left out of the public dialogue. Outside of broadcast TV, more people find information while scrolling their social feeds than any other channel. To meet people where they’re at, we’re here to be an extra set of hands for our partners to live tweet an event, draft social media toolkits, or create unbranded graphics (and sometimes memes!) to engage people online around water.

Influencer collaborations

As the media landscape continues to evolve, it’s becoming more important to partner with trusted messengers like social media creators to help our movement reach new audiences.

We’ve partnered with influencers on Instagram, YouTube, TikTok and more to raise awareness about issues ranging from water-polluting oil pipelines to the benefits of the Inflation Reduction Act.

Water Is Life Music Festival

We took our relationships offline to book Tia Wood, a young Native artist, with more than 2 million TikTok followers to perform on stage.

Line 3

Together with 20+ influencers and celebrities, we worked to raise awareness around the harmful Line 3 oil pipeline reaching 28.5 million followers.

Visual Storytelling

Photos, video, and art have the power to reach people’s hearts and move them to action.

We’ve lent a hand to produce powerful illustrations and videos to shout from the mountain tops about what the future of water could look like if we make the right investments.

Creatives

Campaigns

Our Just Infrastructure campaign equips advocates with messaging and materials to make the case for equitable water spending, and celebrate progress in their communities. We launched this project to help seed stories about Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and Inflation Reduction Act water investments that focus on benefits rather than cost, and set the stage for future funding.

Polling and media analysis

Another arm of our work includes running annual polls to test different water messages for our network such as sentiments around drinking water and farming policies. We also analyze the digital and media landscape periodically and share what the chatter is on topics like Western water supply, safety and affordability.
