Staff spotlight: Jessica Jewell

Hi there. Jessica here, the Water Hub’s new digital director. I’m incredibly humbled to introduce myself and to have the opportunity to be of service to folks fighting for water justice in the West and to support them to tell their stories.

I’ve always been deeply passionate about the protection of the Earth and other living things whom we share our wild planet home with. I’m a California girl who’s happiest while in nature, like camping in Big Sur, fawning over otters off the Central Coast, tromping around the Santa Monica Mountains, or soaking up desert views in Joshua Tree.

I’m now based out of Los Angeles in Tongva territory. Living here, I’ve experienced the consequences climate has on water supplies–– from chronic drought to year-round wildfires.

Before joining the Water Hub, I headed up digital and communications strategies for One Meal a Day for the Planet, an initiative of James Cameron and his wife, Suzy Amis Cameron to connect the dots between industrial animal agriculture and climate change. While here, I worked across platforms developing creative content to inspire change and also partnering with online influencers and high-visibility supporters including Oprah to elevate the message of how the food we eat impacts the planet.

I got my start in the climate movement at TreePeople, a regional nonprofit here in LA, as its Director of Marketing and Communications. My team and I used stories to inspire grassroots and policy change. Our M.O.? Flipping the script on crumbling, inequitable systems and instead reimagining how we can work with nature, not against it–– harvesting the rain and growing tree canopy coverage to protect people from climate change’s impacts and build more resilience.

When I’m not slouching at my laptop, you can find me making a mess in my kitchen, reluctantly getting up to flip vinyl on my record player, or between the pages of my next speculative fiction fix.

The Water Hub is a pro bono communications and digital shop to the water movement–– my inbox is open ([email protected]) and I’m available to meet if you need support–– be it for creative partnership, to spitball strategy, or to be an extra set of hands for your digital or communications work. We’re all in this fight for a better water future together.
