June Water Cooler: Reflect, and wade deeper

This past month, I went on a beach holiday with my partner and I feel blessed to have been able to just be in the water for hours. We were lucky to be hosted by protected clean beaches brimming with life. Clean and accessible beaches where anyone can swim, play, or heal, have unfortunately become a privilege. As always, the wisdom of our oceans amazed me.

I return to work with a backdrop of increasing attacks on our communities. The military invasion of Los Angeles and kidnappings nationwide continue to escalate. In the face of systematic violence, it is imperative for us to connect the dots between all struggles for justice and build intermovement solidarity in our messaging. Narratives matter, and we honor leaders on the ground leading the way such as the New Jersey Alliance for Immigrant Justice and Chispa.

Water’s wisdom runs deep and can continue to guide us. A single drop can seem insignificant, yet the convergence of many drops create infinite oceans with currents and tides. Water connects faraway places, picking up and dropping off pieces along the way, making it key to the well-being of interdependent ecosystems on this planet.

As the heat turns up this summer, look at the water around you and reflect. Don’t be afraid to wade a bit deeper.
